Open Access Program

Screening colonoscopy without a prior office visit

Healthy, age-appropriate patients with no significant gastrointestinal symptoms can have a colonoscopy without a separate pre-op consult.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Age 45 or older (or earlier with a first-degree family history of colon cancer)
  • No current severe abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or GI bleeding
  • No unstable cardiac or pulmonary disease requiring extra pre-op clearance
  • Weight generally below 350 lbs, pending clinical review

Why patients use Open Access

  • A screening colonoscopy without a separate pre-op office visit
  • May avoid a separate office visit when you qualify. Out-of-pocket costs vary by plan and patient.
  • Primary-care referrals are reviewed by our Open Access clinical team

How the program works

A referral or online request is reviewed by our coordinators. If Open Access is appropriate, we contact you to schedule the procedure. If a clinic visit is safer, we book that instead. Participation depends on medical history and pre-procedure insurance approval.

Colonoscopy billing categories

Your primary care physician may refer you for a “screening” exam, but the billing category is confirmed during pre-op review and can change your out-of-pocket cost.

Diagnostic / therapeutic colonoscopy

Used when you have past or present GI symptoms, polyps, or gastrointestinal disease. Deductibles and copays may apply.

Surveillance / high-risk screening

You are asymptomatic but have a personal history of GI disease, polyps, or cancer and need shorter-interval follow-up (for example every 2–5 years).

Preventive screening colonoscopy

You are asymptomatic, meet age criteria, have no personal or family history of GI disease, polyps, or cancer, and have not had a colonoscopy in the last 10 years. Coverage at no cost depends on your plan’s definition of a screening exam.
