What is Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a visual examination of the entire large intestine using a lighted, flexible colonoscope. You are sedated through an IV. Screening, diagnosis, and polyp removal can often be completed in the same visit.
What to expect
You will lie on your side. Once sedation takes effect, the colonoscope is inserted through the rectum and moved gently around the bends of the colon. The physician typically looks all the way to the end of the large intestine and back. The scoping process usually takes 15–30 minutes. You then recover while sedation wears off, and your physician discusses results with you.
Open Access screening
Healthy adults age 45 and older with no significant GI symptoms may qualify for Open Access colonoscopy—skipping a separate pre-op office visit after a nurse coordinator reviews your history and insurance.
