What is Flexible Sigmoidoscopy?
A flexible sigmoidoscopy examines the lower part of the large intestine with a short, thin, lighted tube. The scope may include a biopsy instrument to remove tissue for laboratory evaluation.
During the exam
You lie on your left side with knees drawn up. After a gentle rectal exam, the sigmoidoscope is inserted. Air expands the colon for viewing. As the scope is slowly withdrawn, the lining is examined and biopsies can be taken if needed.
How to prepare
The colon and rectum must be empty. You may use a laxative and small enema, or follow a clear-liquid diet for 12–24 hours (broth, gelatin, strained juice without red or purple dye, water, black coffee or tea). An enema may be given the night before or immediately before the test.
What it can find
Findings may include diarrhea causes, bowel obstruction, diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, anal fissures, hemorrhoids, and polyps in the lower colon.
