What is Anorectal Manometry?
Anorectal manometry records how the anal sphincter and rectal muscles squeeze and relax. A thin catheter with a small balloon is placed in the rectum. You may be asked to squeeze, relax, and bear down while pressures are recorded. The test is done awake in the office.
Why testing is performed
It can help evaluate constipation that may be related to pelvic floor coordination, fecal incontinence, and whether pelvic floor therapy is a reasonable next step. Your physician reviews the tracing with your symptoms before recommending treatment.
What to expect
The visit commonly lasts about 30 minutes. Plan to resume usual activity afterward unless your clinician gives different instructions. A responsible driver is not required for this test when it is done without sedation.
